Gerlon Congo, a 23-year-old athlete from Carchi, earned his ticket to the Olympic Games on Sunday, June 2, 2024, after defeating his opponent in the Thailand qualifier. In a close match, Congo emerged victorious against Cuban boxer Fernando Arzola by split decision (3-2).
This win in the qualifiers was pivotal in enhancing Ecuador's presence in Paris 2024. Congo competed in the +92 kg category, the heaviest weight class in the Olympic Games.
Upon securing his place, Congo expressed his excitement by kneeling and celebrating with his team. Alongside him, Ecuador will be represented in boxing by María José Palacios in the 60 kg category and José Rodríguez in the 71 kg category.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, expecting the participation of around 10,500 athletes from across the globe. Ecuador already has representatives in various disciplines and aims to send a delegation of 40 athletes to these games, following the 48 qualifiers in Tokyo 2020.
